Chiropractic Questions

What does an initial visit consist of?

An initial visit will last roughly one hour long. You will fill out paperwork, visit with the physician, and receive an exam and treatment if it is medically appropriate. If the physician does not find anything to treat, or you need to be referred to another physician, our physicians will do so in the first visit.

Do I need a referral to be seen?

Most insurances do not require a referral for chiropractic but many do require a referral for physical therapy. If you check with your insurance company, they should be able to tell you whether a referral is necessary for chiropractic or physical therapy.

Are x-rays mandatory before I see a physician?

No. If x-rays are warranted with a positive finding on your examination, then x-rays will be taken.

What is the popping sound when a chiropractor adjusts a patient?

The popping sound is a gas release (nitrogen & oxygen) from the joint capsule whenever the joint is mobilized.

I don’t have pain, is there any reason why I should see a chiropractor?

Yes. Overtime, joints endure regular wear and tear. To help maintain joint health, flexibility, and strength, it is recommended you still see a doctor. Learn more on our chiropractic page.

Are all patients adjusted the same way?

No. Our physicians are trained in multiple techniques and your manipulation/adjustment will be determined by what you are comfortable with, and/or what the doctor feels would be the most beneficial to resolve your condition.

Can you adjust pregnant patients?

Absolutely. A good number of OB/GYN doctors will refer their patients to see chiropractors during their pregnancy. Manipulations/adjustments can aid pelvic alignment, sciatica, low back pain, and headaches.

How young is too young to get an adjustment?

We see patients of all ages. The difference is how the manipulation/adjustment is performed. There are several non-thrust techniques that are appropriate for pediatric and geriatric patients.

Can someone with arthritis receive adjustments?

Yes. Not only will you have pain relief with treatment, chiropractic and physical therapy are two of the best ways to help slow progression of arthritic changes.

How long should an average chiropractic appointment last?

A minimum of 20 minutes of one-on-one time with the doctor is recommended. This estimate is based off the time is takes to receive treatment on the joint and to also incorporate muscle work, tissue work, stretching, and exercises for your condition.

If I start chiropractic, do I have to keep going?

No. One of the many misconceptions about chiropractic is that once you start treatment, you cannot stop. This is untrue. Some patients are dealing with severe conditions while others require simple maintenance care. The amount of visits and the treatment performed during those visits is dependent on your personal physical goals and how severe your condition is.

How often do I need to see a chiropractor?

Each condition will require a different number of visits. However, periodic visits help maintain overall spinal and joint health.

I was in a car accident, should I see a chiropractor?

Yes. You always need to see a physician following any accident, even if it’s just your primary care physician to ensure there is not damage that could affect your health long-term. Chiropractors can help alleviate any musculoskeletal injury due to your accident. Bring your claim information with you to your appointment.

Can seeing a chiropractor improve my athletic performance?

Absolutely. With any athletic competition, there is going to be wear and tear on muscles and joints. With proper care, injuries can be prevented, treated and rehabilitated post-surgery. In fact, a good number of professional athletes seek chiropractic treatment regardless of whether they are in pain. From golfers to football players, dancers, and weight lifters, chiropractic and physical therapy helps them stay at the top of their game. Visit our chiropractic and physical therapy pages to learn more.

Can the doctors give me exercises and stretches to do at home?

Yes. It is important to follow-up with your physician to ensure treatment is progressing appropriately.

What type of massage should I schedule?

Swedish Massage:

This is the most common type of massage therapy in the United States. It consists of long smooth strokes, kneading, and circular movements on superficial layers of muscle using massage lotion or oil. Swedish massage therapy can be very gentle and relaxing. If you’ve never had massage before, this is a good one to try first.

Deep Tissue Massage:

Deep tissue massage targets the deeper layers of muscle and connective tissue. The massage therapist uses slower strokes or friction techniques across the grain of the muscle. Deep tissue massage is used for chronically tight or painful muscles, repetitive strain, postural problems, or recovery from injury. People often feel sore for one to two days after deep tissue massage.

Hot Stone Massage:

Heated, smooth stones are placed on certain points on the body to warm and loosen tight muscles and balance energy centers in the body. The massage therapist may also hold stones and apply gentle pressure with them. The warmth is comforting. Hot stone massage is good for people who have muscle tension but prefer lighter massage.

Pregnancy/Prenatal Massage:

Massage therapists who are certified in pregnancy massage know the proper way to position and support the woman’s body during the massage, and how to modify techniques. Pregnancy massage is used to reduce stress, decrease swelling, relieve aches and pains, and reduce anxiety and depression. The massage is customized to a woman’s individual needs.

Sports Massage:

Sports massage is specifically designed for people who are involved in physical activity. But you don’t have to be a professional athlete to have one-it’s also used by people who are active and work out often. The focus isn’t on relaxation but on preventing and treating injury and enhancing athletic performance. A combination of techniques are used. The strokes are generally faster than Swedish massage. Facilitated stretching is a common technique. It helps to loosen muscles and increase flexibility.

What should I expect from my first appointment?

For your first appointment, you will fill out a basic questionnaire that helps the massage therapist know a little more about you such as your medical history, areas you’re feeling discomfort and the type of massage you would like. Then, you will be taken to the therapy room. You may have your massage with as many clothes on as you would like. Typically, most massages involve taking off some of your garments.

The therapist will discuss your problem areas and focus on those to help alleviate any soreness or pain. If there is too much pressure or not enough pressure, you are welcome to communicate that with your therapist. The therapist’s main goal is to help you remain comfortable and to benefit from the massage session as much as possible.

During your massage you might experience sighing, yawning, changes in breathing, stomach gurgling, movement of intestinal gas, emotional feelings, energy shifts, or falling asleep. These are all natural responses to relaxation.

Our massage sessions are therapeutic, relaxing and reduce muscular tension. It is not a substitute for medical examination, diagnosis or treatment. Any sexual remarks or advances will terminate the session and payment will still be required for the scheduled treatment.

Massage therapists may use fingertips, knuckles, hands, elbows, and forearms during the massage. You may be asked to breathe deeply as the massage therapist works on certain tense areas.

Massage is not recommended for certain people:

  • Infectious skin disease, rash, or open wounds
  • Immediately after surgery, chemotherapy or radiation, unless recommended by your doctor
  • People with osteoporosis should consult their doctor before getting a massage
  • Prone to blood clots. There is a risk of blood clots being dislodged. If you have heart disease, check with your doctor before having a massage
  • Pregnant women should check with their doctor first if they are considering getting a massage. Massage in pregnant women should be done by massage therapists who are trained in pregnancy massage.
  • Massage should not be done directly over bruises, inflamed skin, unhealed wounds, tumors, abdominal hernia, or areas of recent fractures.

How much does an average visit cost?

The cost of your visit depends on your insurance plan. If your plan has a deductible, you may be responsible for the total cost of the appointment. If your deductible is met, you may have a co-insurance or a copay that applies to your visits. Chiropractors are specialist, so the specialist copay will apply.

How does the billing of your office work?

Elite Performance & Rehabilitation covers most insurance plans. If you have an insurance plan we do not cover or your insurance plan does not cover chiropractic or physical therapy, you are responsible for your bill in full at the time of service. We verify your benefits with your insurance provider, however any benefit information that we receive is neither a guarantee of payment nor a determination of medical necessity.

Non-covered services: Please be aware that some – not all – of the services you receive may be non-covered or not considered reasonable or necessary by the insurers. Please contact your insurance company to determine your benefits to avoid any unexpected charges for which you will be held responsible. All insurance plans vary and therefore it is not possible for us to know which services are not covered on your plan. You will be informed of services that are not typically covered prior to them being performed. [You may request a pricing list of these services upon request.]

Claims submission: We will submit your claims and assist you in any way we reasonably can to have your claims paid correctly. Your insurance company may ask you to supply certain information directly to them and it is your responsibility to comply with their request. Complete and accurate information is very important because ultimately we look to you for payment of your claim.
Billing: There may be delays in receiving a bill from Elite Performance as insurance payments and benefits determination may take in excess of a year to finally be settled. If you receive an EOB, the patient responsibility is the amount you may owe on your account. Feel free to call us if you have not received a statement from us after 60 days of receiving your EOB.

Motor Vehicle Accidents and Worker’s Compensation Cases:
If you have been in an accident and are filing a motor vehicle accident or worker’s compensation claim, you are responsible for providing us the necessary information to ensure your claim is paid in a timely and accurate manner. Failure to provide the necessary information will result in the charges you accrue at our offices to be your financial responsibility. The claim number, adjustor’s name and contact information is required prior to treatment.
